  1. What interest me most is what happened to make the hidden sanctuary city unnecessary and eventually fade into the status of myth….  When did people leave? Ha! Turns out the underground city was a Christian refuge, used both to escape muslim persecution and Hun invasions.  The last documented use was in 1909 when local Christians used if as a refuge in local quarrels with muslims.  But in 1923, the Christian inhabitants of the region were expelled from Turkey and moved to Greece in the population exchange between Greece and Turkey, whereupon the tunnels were abandoned. I took only 2 generations to go from hideout to myth!
