  1. Those crazy, intelligent Russian! Sounds to me like they found a way to mechanically enhance individual access to the cosmic consciousness. This would explain both the nervous apprehension and its eventual decline:  Any event, act or choice which transfers identification from mind (ego) to consciousness (awareness) is perceived as a threat as long as one identifies rigidly with the collection of ideas, thoughts and memories which constitutes the thought-complex of „who-I-am“ – and in a way it really does „threaten to dissolve the ego“ – however briefly.  Children are usually much more tolerant and flexible regarding such changes in ideation – for one thing they have much fewer firmly mental habits than adults. And a diminished ego together with an increased awareness feels wonderful once the ego stops whining, hence the eventual absence of nervousness…
