Venezuela supplanted financially based monopolies with state monopolies, in effect the same idiotic fault which toppled the USSR and still drags Russia down. What Trump did is well within sound liberal market economy, don't let monopolies get so big the control the market and start dictating what laws they want applied. The same goes for his tariff policy. It's actually rather elegantly done: The chosen items triggers no trade wars with China nor Europe, because the bulk is too low to matter enough, yet still send the signal he wants loud and clear: The US of A insists on a much more level playing field on commerce and will take the necessary steps - but only if others wont listen...
