  1. No, epigenetics is the lifeboat. The dissemination of genes across individuals is caused by virus. Their method of replication is to make cells produce copies of themselves, spread out and do the same to more cells elsewhere. But errors occur. Sometimes the virus replicated carries a little bit of the former host dna or rna with it. This may then be passed on to the next "victim" and if that cell survives the virus attack, the genetic bit may carry forward as new heritage. This accidental gene mixing by virus is actually what is spreading resistance to antibiotics from one bacteria type to another - even to different environments - and that's the main reason antibiotics in farming reduce the efficiency of antibiotics in medicine. Epigenetics is the individual cell's newly discovered ability to shut down active genes and activate dormant genes according to environmental demands and the needs of the organism - and even more important - to pass forward this bettering of the cellular setup to offsprings...
