Well, 60 years ago this concept of „don’t risk helping“ was already know as a characteristic of China – so much so that it was in our schoolbooks (Denmark) but the explanation was different (and I have no idea if it was true or not). It had to do with „taking responsibility for that persons life for as long as you were presumed to have prolonged it“ meaning for instance that if you saved someone from certain death, he was your responsibility for the rest of his life.

@cendora7576 I don’t recognize such exploitation. A fiction of yours, perhaps? Why would an unselfish person, who had rescued some one without second thought, suddenly turn around and „exploit“ this? In dire straits the rescuer might ask a favor in return, but he certainly wouldn’t press the issue, because givers aren’t beggars.
