  3. mike akridge No, the atmospheric pressure is an indication of the weight of the air column above the point of measuring. The higher you go, the less infrared reflection is retained by the atmosphere, making everything lose heat faster. That's why it's colder higher up. The greenhouse effect is high frequency radiation coming in virtually unhindered by the atmosphere from the sun, then being slowed down by absorption in all solid bodies, thus lowering the frequency towards the infrared end in the reflected radiation, which cannot penetrate air as well as ultraviolet. The energy retention is therefore higher where the atmosphere is thicker. Water has no overall cooling effect, because only minuscule amounts escape to space. Quite to the contrary, in fact, since water vapor (clouds) is even more effective than methane in blocking infrared. Don't you learn these things in school?
