Quantity was no longer a challenge when NATO outnumbered and continued to do so after it was formed in 1949. NATO, throughout the period numerically could bring in 8.5 million (500,000 more including the French by Treating in 1966 of Special NATO Status) to the USSR/Warsaw Pact's 5.3 million. NATO never lost the numerical lead but to no avail as the numbers were neutralized once the USSR achieved Nuclear Status. Keep in mind that NATO had during the Cold War two nuclear allies already in Europe that could launch their weapons deep in European USSR, while the USA could reach eastern USSR quite easily with it's nuclear bases in AK, and Asia. The USA alone had access to 986 bases worldwide in 1987, the USSR and allies 10, outisde of the USSR to which were frozen 9 months out of the year - a nuclear strike by either meant suicide. On the conventional side, a war in Europe would have also resulted in catastrophe as it's geographic landmass was not made for conventional warfare by urban concentrations and topography. The old Fulda Gap scenario was too mountainous and urbanized from Hanover to Fulda/Frankfurt for flanking movements and didn't allow for quick maneuvering of infantry forces - excellent targets for NATO's superior Air Forces. The Hof Corridor too sits on mountainous terrain, narrowing towards the large urban conglomeration of Nuremberg forcing any infantry to squeeze in small corridors or the Bohemian forest - not good. Russian troops were ill equipped, had no socks, were not trained to make decisions and couldn't rely on Warsaw Pact Nations soldiers to loyally and "voluntarily" defend the USSR. Soviet reinforcements were kept behind the Ural Mountains and would have been far too slow to transport in time of conflict, as the USSR's geography would have been hindered by it's own vast area, notwithstanding it's inferior air force that wouldn't have been able to protect ground reserves from NATO's superior Air Forces and Missiles which had better precision targeting. Both NATO and Warsaw Pact realized that the defense facing each other on such a small continent was simply too saturated forcing both to use missiles and nuclear threats as their main strike capabilities. In 1987, 60% of the USSR's own military couldn't' speak Russian and were treated inferior if from the Middle Eastern RSFR areas (the "STANS," Georgia, and Siberia. The Warsaw Pact Nations had either gone democratic (Poland), or were cutting ties altogether with the USSR; Romania didn't even allow Soviet troops in it's country and Yugoslavia long left and was never really a reliable ally to begin with nor Albania and Hungary. The Czech and East German (most closely aligned had fallen apart internally )and the USSR could no longer finance their satellites. From 1945 to 1991, the USSR and it's allies NEVER matched the West's NATO and USA military might in terms of both conventional and nuclear capabilities as the West simply had the financial, economical and military means to cripple the USSR into bankruptcy in 1991. Currently, there is no other nation that can wage war on all continents while maintaining a home defense beside the USA. Today, Russia has fallen to become a regional power having difficulty invading the Ukraine while China is not willing to help a "losing" side while it looks north to the mineral rich Siberia to which now Russia must trade with on Chinese Terms and not it's own. The Ruble has no value and the dollar remains the number one traded currency in the World since 1945. The next top 8 currencies are from nations allied to the USA in military treaties or have US troops on it's soil - China's Yuan (Renimbi) stands at number 8 and is the exception. The USA's state of California alone has a higher GDP than that of Russia, no more needs to be written about that. The US Propaganda machine worked it's magic and continues to do so to this day. @chromeisbadalex6466
