  1. Russia really never had the Baltic Sea as the chokepoint for the Baltic Sea is Denmark/Norway which were both and remain allied to NATO. In a time of war, the Baltic Sea would have served a minimum to nil a resource for the former USSR or it's Warsaw Pact. The same was true for access to the Mediterranean with Turkey/Greece as another chokepoint.
