I think you can expand more on the mindset of these people. 3 factors to consider: 1) Entering into an ivy involves being prepared to cheat to win and use unfair advantages to their fullest. So they are taught at an early age that life is unfair, and the importance of leaning into that unfairness. 2) This pathway is extremely demanding, leaving very little time to think about anything other than success. They simply do not have time to consume anything beyond the most mainstream content. 3) They will never experience deprivation, so they can never know it. These are people who won the lottery twice before they learned to walk.

@Georgie16 Yes, briefly. And I had all the advantages. Prepped from day one. My first grade tuition was over sixty thou. That's primary school. But most of my commentary is on what I observed in other more motivated students.

The China comparison seems forced and simplistic. They are at a different stage of development and playing catch up. So it makes sense to prioritize and celebrate STEM. Once things start to slow down financial shennanigans will once again be the primary way to get an edge.

@stephendaley266 They're still playing catch up. They have a comparative advantage in a few sectors but are still behind in most areas. They're also significantly less wealthy, less powerful, and have a much lower standard of living for a much larger chunk of the population. There is a reason why they still come here in droves whereas we do not go there. They still need a couple of decades.

@stephendaley266 Not really. They have an advantage in a few key sectors but overall they're still a couple of decades behind.

@TheMojoGang Pretty much every power eventually falls to rent seeking behavior from powerful consolidated private interests. So yes, they will too. They haven't figured out any magic formula. They're just at an earlier stage in the life cycle.

@chasethechase2298 No finance major will ever take anthro & a basic US history or civics class will not cover much of this. Movements like OCP are loud and flashy but are co-opted or ended fairly quickly with the media being quite adept at erasing their specific points and turning them into just general performances of vague dissatisfaction. So it's pretty easy for certain students to settle into a comfortable feedback loop. And this is the most time they'll have. Once their careers and families start, it's basically impossible.
