You can literally just break a window and get that. He almost certainly just suffers from some severe mental disorder. A large percentage of the NY homeless population are walking around with untreated mental disorders due to the weak social safety net in the United States.

@lupowins Real estate speculators parking their wealth in Manhattan should be given a 1% tax increase and firms with more than 50 employees who do not exhaust "work from home" opportunities should also be charged a penalty. Business hour tolls should be placed on all vehicle bridges entering Manhattan with all funds to go towards subsidizing free subway and bus rides. In addition, police funding should be fixed at current levels for at least 5 years. Any planned future increases should be diverted to the MTA's free transit system. I'd also like to see external audits of capital projects for the MTA and a review of executive salaries. That should do it.

@Eli-ss9gj The average person doesn't need to ride anywhere. They need to get to work and back. Which costs ~$6.00 The truth is the system should be free. Or at worse it should cost $1.25. Current prices are ridiculous.

@terryscott2632 Simply slapping the MTA worker on the same platform would have exposed him to 7 years for assaulting a public employee. Throwing a brick through the Port Authority police station window will get you enough time to be out long after the pandemic is over. Threatening the United Nations school, messing with any consulate, slapping a bus driver, etc. There are tons of ways to get long sentences. Hell, even punching the same lady would do it. This plot your thinking up is outlandish, unlikely, and relies on many assumptions. NYC is not now, nor has it ever had a wave of homeless people committing major crimes on purpose to go to jail. However it is an established fact that significant portions of the NYC homeless population suffer from severe mental disorders (up to 25%). This is the most likely answer.

@vedrisca Not really. Quality of life and social safety net are 2 different things. And the latter is definitely a major problem for the entire United States. The USA as a whole lags significantly behind most other major developed countries in the accessibility of many social services and labor laws (healthcare, mental health services, welfare, elder care, maternity/paternity leave, childcare &Pre-K services, etc.)

@TORNTOA This is not true. It really depends on the window and the way you break it.

@terryscott2632 In NYC striking an MTA worker automatically elevates a petty assault charge to assault in the 2nd degree exposing you to prison sentence of up to 7 years.

@daeroc Stop being silly.

@haydenr7528 Sure, but if that's the case then the cause is (like I said) due to mental disturbance. Once we've agreed his actions were dictated by mental disorder, we don't really need to append an additional imaginary plan that he has.

@frankieb9444 If he wanted to, yes. Break a shop window? No big deal. Throw 3 bricks through the windows of the Port Authority police & antiterrorism national guard units station? You're getting locked up for a while.

Thank God Connery wasn't there.
