100% a lot of Japanese people, well I can only speak for my generation Japanese people, do not know about the history and of what happened during WW2. I know because I met many as an International student in the US and made friends with them. They only realized it when they were informed by it via courses in the university, otherwise, they'd have no idea. I remember a good friend of mine actually apologizing to me (I'm not a victim of the atrocity, although my grandparents lived through it) and another friend (we're both from countries where Japan occupied during the WWII), and I was surprised at how apologetic she was. I didn't request her apology but it was such a moment that I will always remember until now.
