  1. I would hazard a guess that Prigozhin was kept around for intelligence reasons. GRU was keeping Prigozhin under surveillance to find out if he had connections to the West or other supporters inside Russia. The interesting thing about the Wagner saga is what will happen in Africa. Now the Wagner mercenaries are looking like Russian soldiers and not a private enterprise. Much has been made of Wagner's takeover of Africa, but the fact remains that Russian trade and investment in Africa are minimal. Most African elites in fact dread military coups in their own countries. It really makes no strategic sense for Russia to instigate a wave of military coups... in particular because the Sahel countries in question are so poor and unstable that Russia has zero chance of improving the wealth and security of these places.
