  1. People often think that the European Union regulates AI because there are no AI companies in Europe. But if you look at the continent as a whole, the investment ecosystem is there as are the companies. You cannot regulate AI unless you actually understand it. Ethical AI is a good way to stand out. European hospitals use AI widely as a diagnostic tool. French APCs have networked AI that launches defensive systems when the vehicles are under fire. ChatGPT got a lot of press, but what was left out was the contribution made by several European companies into that product. Making AI regulation also gives a lot of political power. On a final note, it is no coincidence that Brussels is making AI regulation at the same time as we are talking about the corrosive force of populism and containing it.

  2. Computing power is nowhere near enough to simulate the neurons we have. Maybe once quantum computing really takes off... Until then AI is basically a "finish this pattern" tool, to put it extremely crudely. It is still a powerful tool and we will see in the 2024 elections how it can do the evil things Ian warned us about, sadly.
