  1. American policy towards Europe has always been that there needs to be stability, but not too much. Great Britain is in the EU but makes sure to stop any real integration. After Brexit it seems that USA-UK relations have cratered because UK lost their main value as a partner in Europe. Funny how history works. I remember reading the American media in the 1990's and a lot of the conversation was about making sure that EU will never become a "second superpower." Now the conversation is about making sure that EU will never become a "third superpower" so clearly progress has been made. You definitely see the longing for the Merkel days as well. Find someone that manages the various crises but does not have a strategic vision about EU integration. But considering the total implosion of Merkel's Ostpolitik, you are not going to get another Merkel. It might be time for our American friends to find a more interesting vision about Europe.
