  1. It is certainly a strategic disaster for US as well, for Turkish reasons. Erdogan is openly supporting Hamas both financially and politically. Hamas has a quite sophisticated economical structure and it is in fact located in Istanbul. Erdogan is very understandably upset that Boris Johnson sunk the Turkey-mediated peace talks in the early parts of the Ukraine War. Ukraine has of course done its part to scupper the Turkish grain deal as well. Then we have the Swedish issue as well. I remember when Mr. Blinken went to Turkey after the earthquake to talk about letting Sweden join NATO. The Turkish foreign minister said during the press conference that this visit changed nothing, addressing Mr. Blinken in front of the cameras. Things have only went downhill from there. I do not think that Turkey is in fact a reliable NATO member at all. Erdogan is arming Azerbaijan, Macron is arming Armenia. I would not be surprised in the least if Turkey left NATO in the 2020s.
