  18.  @thkiwi1  They want to join a non-descript organisation that insofar has yielded little political and economic cooperation. The actual results of BRICS so far have been more than modest. Cooperation is little. Hence why I don’t freak put about Egypt applying. It won’t save their economy. That was the IMF with 20 billion USD and probably more soon. BRICS gotta do some serious work before they can be taken as serious as competing organisations. And I doubt any cooperation will extend to the same NATO like architecture. Something that has been maintained ror over 70 years. Don’t forget that there are many rivalries inside BRICS. Oh, and in Egypt‘s case; they would not try to get rid of the US. The army especially sees the US overwhelmingly positive - they get lots of equipment from there.

  21. You misunderstood. It cuts the ferry time from 45 minutes to 8 minutes through a tunnel. The current route from Copenhagen to Hamburg takes 4:36 hours or so. The new route will not go via Jutland (the main island of Denmark) but go south and pass the Baltic sea in a tunnel. This cuts several hundred kilometers. Additionally the route will be high speed (250) so travel times are even shorter. To make this viable, the ferry has to be replaced. It takes 45 minutes just to cross, you gotta plan at least half an hour of preparation before you are on board and off again. It will save a ton of CO2 when it's done. Travel time will be 2 hours then by train. That is way faster than the aircraft or road.

  22.  @mlepa  Ehm, 7.4 billion Euros to built a tunnel that will cut travel times by up to 40% for people from Denmark and Sweden and provide an environmental friendly way of transport for people and goods is in my opinion not oo much. With that logic, nothing should ever be built again. Sometimes you gotta invest to save money. This might sound harsh but I don't care - this is European tax payer money and it should be spend in Europe. What would you do with the 7.4 billion? Transfer it to Africa? Thank you very much but no. (Where are you from by the way? This might explain your hesistance to valuable infrastructure projects).

  23. A lot of projects in Eastern Europe have been completed in the last decades when they joined the EU. Now obviously Western Europe is richer and can finance HSR and such things better.

  28. Be objective. China is rising fast whereas America does not anymore. The GDP of the US will be overtaken in the next 5 years. The best universities aren't an objective collection but rather an anglo-american comparison. It is impractical to compare it to the education systems of other nations. The Chinese military receives a lot of money through black channels and additionally, the US pays way less and has extremely high costs for soldiers. Costs China does not need to bear. The US does not own all the major tech companies. Laughable claim. China got a pendant to Facebook, Amazon, Apple.... Do not underestimate them. China is increasingly producing media. If you cannot spell cyber, it is mood. And guns, you do not need the best guns. Wars are economical today and the US is loosing. You are an Algerian idiot. Sincerely, a China-critical German.

  37. Please check your sources. 1. The plebiscite was only held in BW. Not in all of Germany. As someone from NRW, I had no say. 2. That is false. The motion was passed in the entirely BW-held referendum. 3. The stress tests did not come to the same conclusion. 4. Munich is much more of an end-point than Stuttgart.... Munich is at the German periphery whereas Stuttgart is not. 5. There was no space to built more tracks... And then, travel on those old tracks takes long. The new tunnels with more tracks are way faster. Please, get your facts straight.

You also have generally higher costs in the US because of organisation. It isn't limited solely to blue or red states. It is a nation wide phenomenon.

  42. Really, no. 1. China will largely invest at home. There will be some lines going elsewhere but mostly they will remain at home. 2. To the North, there is Siberia and distances become too great to make HSR feasible. Plus, population density rapidly declines. 3. West, same story. All those -stans. 4. South: India, Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan. Interesting for freight but for a traveller from Bejing, not interesting. Too large distances. People forget how massive China is. 5. East: North Korea remains isolated. WIthout North Korea, no access to South Korea. Japan, too far and a strategic rival. Taiwan, far but not completely inaccessible. Probably not worth the cost. Unclear political support, leaning no in Taiwan. I could literally only see Vietnam and Cambodia gaining access.

  46. It is mainly financed with debt as are most infrastructure project. The debt is corporate debt but the corporations are state-owned. The lines aren't really profitable. Even if costs are just 17 million dollars per kilometer, they sell the tickets for even less and then maintenance and so need to be covered. China currently grows the net because they can and even if it fails, they will have something of value in place.
