Morocco already has one high speed line for 320 kph. But the network will expand in the next decades.

They won't run the trains in the middle of the desert. And clearing tracks could be a nice way to employ some people.

While I agree that government has held Egypt back, don’t forget that Egyptians also have to make some changes in their lives to become as successful as other nations. Economic growth is more than just government.
3
More like the other way round
2
The property prices in the UK are much higher, whereas in Egypt, most of the line can run in unused land
2
Moroccans would disagree…
2
Because building underground is prohibitively expensice
2
They need more capacity anyway.

Most countries do. Often a part of transport ministries.

Siemens is German though, not at all Italian.
1
Why would they then try to pay off with a German company when it was an Italian? Anyway, are the contracts the same?
1
@mab7727 Italy has their own train manufacturing and railway business. No reason to buy off Germany to buy off Italy when you can buy off Italy directly. As for the contract. Is it identical is scope? Or were things changed? Anyway, it isn’t very realistic to built so much rail for only 9 billion. And I checked, the contract that was just signed is for 4.5 billion dollars.
1
@mab7727 That would be the entire plan in action. Right now Siemens got the 4.5 billion plan for the first itinerary
1
And how will they pay for it?
1
Nah, Egypt is neither the most prosperous or democratic country. For democratic; I would say Indonesia. For prosperous; I would say UAE or Qatar But Egypt isn’t the worst in any category either… it has a small GDP/capita but that one is rising. And while it isn’t democratic, at least it isn’t a monarchy

The idea is that European compatibility would allow future upgrades easier to be implemented. As for the compatibility itself - European rail standards are quite high...
1
@Uhoh11111 not really. Egypt will get the same safety systems the UK gets. It’s just as you said, UK is much more densely populated and almost every stretch of land is owned by someone. And they can demand compensation for their loss of property. That drives costs - land acquisition
1
@Uhoh11111 that’s not that big of a problem as both would have to built a foundation for the rails; which will be laid in concrete. As I said, most of Egypt is uninhabited desert that belongs to the state. Not in UK
1
@Omer1996E.C Spend the money on infrastructure and that is a good thing.
1
Tax payers...
1
Cause a train can go where a ship cannot. And people like speed
1
Actually no. That was the military…
1
Egypt have enough people to tax and a Suez Canal that brings in a lot of mone

Can people afford to live in those cities though? I agree, you have to spend to make development, but IMHO they should spend a lot more on schools, especially primary enrollment. Agriculture and education, this is important.

China doesn’t have the best reputation. Many countries have now realised that any infrastructure they built uses Chinese steel, concrete, engineers and workers. Most of the time the local economy can contribute very little to it. So why would countries take on debt to finance Chinese companies?
1
It isn't too bad if you get infrastructure for it.

Europe really isn’t all that interconnected by rail. Maybe Western Europe but it still takes a day to travel from Germany to Rome by train. And Northern Africa is even larger than Europe.
1
@FarsightAE Maybe for freight this could be a possibility. But I lack the phantasy for passenger rail, sorry. Morocco is 3700 kilometers away from Egypt. Nobody will sit in such a train.
