  1.  @ezix3753  Saudi Arabia may have nature and historical sites but they aren't well developed at all. There is very little pre-islamic left and the city of Mecca and other holy places are prohibited for non-muslims like me. Plus, the way they reconstructed Mecca looks horrid to me. I saw old pictures from 1910 - so much more impressive.

  3. Government will probably find anouther source of taxation. Probably electricity if we have replaced oil sufficiently. Governments are very creative when drawing taxes.

  4.  @Crazy-ej5gb  I have yet to read a more stupid comment than today. If you cut oil, China will come and demand oil to be flowing... And they won't ask nicely. The US is energy independent now. Have been for a while. Fracking and increased investment into green energy already reduced demand for Saudi oil. The US only accounts for 5% of Saudi trade and only imports 10 billions worth of Saudi oil. Obama bowed to Japans prime minister and the queen too. That is called manners. Etiquette. If Saudi Arabia decides to cut oil flow, prices will rise inevitably but the beneficiaries won't be other Arab nations. OPEC doesn't control oil as they used to. Russian and American producers would profit and Saudi Arabia will needlessly cut their income at a time when they need the income to a) fight an unproductive war, b) try to be seen as a reliable business partner for investment and c) have substantial costs with new development projects such as Neom. 500 billion for a city to copy Dubai. And I doubt muslims all over the world will support you. An oil price hike will hit their economies too and during covid, that is the last they could need. Use your brain please.

  11.  @garystrankman3841  Saudi Arabia is a huge investor for land in Sudan for that precise reason. Their groundwater levels have been used up by inefficient use for water intensive crops.

  14.  @Dfathurr  The thing is that Hajj does have limits - the mosque can only be built so big and the month is only that long... So there are limits on Hajj income. Plus, most muslims come from not so rich backgrounds. Spend a week for Hajj may require years of saving for many families - they aren't all that likely to spend another week in a high cost country like Saudi Arabia.

  15. It is very much true. Although a lot of the new entertainment is designed so that Saudi citizens spend their weekends and holidays inside the country, paying for entertainment here (which can be taxed and employs Saudis). But creating an innovative economy takes a lot of time and would require a lot of investment for uncertain yield. Tourism has the advantage that you can implement it relatively fast and that it is a labour intensive sector - creating a lot of jobs for Saudi citizens (at least this is the plan). In time, with educational reforms and investments into R&D through private sector industries, this will change.

  16. You guy have clearly no idea about anything. Doesn't seem as if you ever paid a tuition fee for college. At first, European nations are much, much smaller than the USA, both in landsize and population. Naturally, we therefore have a lower GDP. However, divide GDP's by population and you will not see a big difference. Maybe a few thousand bucks but that is not much. Secondly, you have a very limited understanding of European "socialism". We pay higher taxes but compared to the average American, the average German will usually be much better covered medically, will be provided a pension and if he gets unemployed, will generally not loose everything. Not even health care. Oh, and before I forget, taxes are similar, only the social founding is different, check Bismark system for this. And where is Venasala? Close to Covfefe? Talking about budget, Germany manages a healthy positive budget even with refugees and other unwanted expenses. You just waist yours for your military. You got nukes but do you need 6k of them? 1000 should be enough. I also do not understand why 10,000 tanks make your life safer. It is about choices you make. Should we pay more for defense, hell yes but you should quit some spending for other stuff. And social security is of course reducing crime. Who needs crime if you get help? And it is clever to let the rest pay for your education. You will benefit later, though not individually but society. Not just rich kids going to uni but instead the brightest and smartest.

  22. The price he mentions is the price at which Saudi Arabia can turn a net profit on oil and cover all the government expenses without debt. Saudi Arabia itself has some of the lowest oil production costs, some oil fields don't even cost 10$ a barrel. But those are depleting fast.

  25. Actually no. Many of those poor nations may skip fossil fuels entirely. There are many African nations that, in order to electrify, only use or mostly use renewable energy programmes since this is what they get funding for and b) because it makes economic sense. A developing country in Africa needs a one time investment for a solar park and then this thing runs perpetually. No need for maintenance, oil / gas / coal costs...

  30.  @Ali-gd3ud  The thing is, that water is fossile water which is not replenishable. Meaning that it is a finite reserve. As for the land purchases, this might be enough for a while but governments across the world will not necessarily continue, not when their population exert a lot of pressure on their governments to provide the land they need for themselves.

  42.  @Neccaps  Absolutely correct, although the problem is exacerbated for women. As for corruption, it is perceived more in Saudi Arabia than in Dubai. Most publications estimate it to be more of a problem in SA than in Dubai. Absolutely true, overqualification can be an issue. You should look to South Korea where a bachelor degree qualifies for a McDonalds... Saudi Arabia needs to attract businesses and innovation that would use those highly skilled talent that is there. But that doesn't happen all that often in highly restrictive nations. There are lots of studies on how male-female interaction is the most productive.

  47. Saudi citizens actually seek employment. And there aren’t enough jobs because the citizens are either unwilling to do the job or not skilled enough for private sector to do the job… If 9 weeks of school in a school year are centered around religious education (with doubtful relevance in a modern economy and a hindrance in intercultural relations) and 23 weeks for the rest, that is a problem. Especially if the Saudi system does not teach critical rhinking skills and problem solving but rather memorisation.
