  2. Original designs were at one level, as per Suez, but it required an insane amount of excavation, so didn't happen. At some point, it comes down to costs.  @j3kfd9j

  3. Pumping will probably be inevitable at some stage, at no small cost of installation, maintenence and operating. It's been too easy for too long and folks have got greedy . . .
