  2. I was told by a local drain-cleaning operative, a few years ago, that main roads were suction-cleaned every year and minor roads bi-annually. Perhaps it happens less frequently now, saving on costs so as to afford the generous staff pension scheme and councillors' expenses? Extending the service period won't be noticed, initially but, in time, it will. Look at road signs and the way they're obstructed everywhere (I've even seen it on m-ways) with signage obscured.

"Built around the turn of the 20th century" and considering the rate of the change in population, increased water usage (more people, cleaner people, more water for baths, showers and washing machines) and sewage too, total capacity has slowly become inadequate. It was never a problem until we reached a tipping point . . . . and now we're there.

  7. Apparently, building of reservoirs in England was not allowed by €USSR rules (environmental b/s perhaps?) and traditional dredging of the Somerset Levels was ended as well. Eventually, large areas of that county were flooded. Sediment build-up is a slow and insidious process, leading to reduced flow capacity, all to protect a few newts or tadpoles . . .

  11. Exactly. The problem has been building up over time and now we're at a tipping point. Money could and should have been invested over many decades, but instead it's been spent on supporting a consumer economy or given away with virtue-signalling in mind. It's not just that the money has all gone (it has) but we're in debt up to our necks . . .
