Cryptomining — the computing process that generates the digital currency — consumes an absurd amount of energy and directly contributes to our growing climate crisis. Biden's proposed tax would be included in the next federal budget. Biden's Council of Economic Advisors argued that crypto mining's "high-energy consumption" often has "negative spillovers on the environment, quality of life, and electricity grids where these firms locate across the country." The science agrees with them. Currently, cryptomining companies evade paying for the impact they inflict on others in the form of pollution as well as their role in driving up energy prices. Taxing them properly would go a long way toward balancing the system in favor of average Americans. Republicans can be expected to fight this proposed tax tooth and nail as they do every measure that benefits real human beings over profits. Retweet if you support Biden's crypto tax!
