Seeing how the coup made Ukraine more pro-West Putin panicked and funded separatists in Ukraine. For 8 years, there has been a war raging. Putin was restraining himself untill Ukraine made efforts to join Nato. That is what triggered this mess. Ukraine joining Nato would be very bad for Russia in the long run. The West is very naive, and has lost its mind in these peace times. Now you care about Ukraine, when it's too late. There were plenty of chances to prevent this invasion prior.
