  1. It also could had changed things in Russia. More Western culture imported, to the point even Putin would had changed a bit. Russia even wanted to join nato in 2008. Had they been accepted, perhaps in time there would had been no need for nato anymore and thus things would slowly change for the better. Ukraine would also be able to join, making Russia's access to the black sea for commercial interests a non-issue.
