It was also a show of force, to show congress Ukraine can still fight and should get the 61 billion dollars. So, Russia went in and dragged Kiev to Istanbul where they would make an agreement where Ukraine would not join nato and in exchange Russia would leave Ukraine. The fates of Donbass would be contested later. Ukraine agreed, but then Boris Johnson traveled to Istanbul to tear the agreements apart, on behest of nato. No deal meant the start of the SMO. The rest is history.

But you can also use logic: The Maidan coup, the comments Ukranian leaders made about Russian speakers after it, the fact that Ukranians are all Banderites (neo-nazi's and nazi worship). The Minsk accords, Germany's role in it, Merkel's weakness and lies. It all adds up. You can believe Russian statements about it, this isn't the USSR. Russia is different from the Soviet times, Russia is honest enough to agree to the Minks accords (which was broken by Ukraine and Germany), honest enough to honor all agreements and is paying the price for their honesty.
