@adam2122 no it wasn't. Before islam, nobody cared about Palestine. It was nothing but a roman backwater province, de-populated after the many Jewish and Samaritan revolts. It was a hostile desert. After islam, it became holy for muslims but even then no one lived there except pious believers. Palestine remained a backwater province for all the empires who ruled over it, first roman, then arab, then ottoman and then british. Never was there reason to have a permanent presence there untill the 19th century. That is when the Zionist movement became a thing. Rest is history.
