  7. Probably your desk lamp was emitting some UV. As the UV hits the metal electrodes, some electrons are kicked out. This helps in ionizing the gas. As ceber54 said, it is the photoelectric effect.

  8.  @thany3  : Game cartridges such as Atari, NES, SuperNintendo, N64 only have copper contacts and these oxidize and cause problems. Probably, if they were gold plated or made with solid 20% gold or 100% nickel, they would be in a better condition. Nickel forms a thin hard oxide and conducts electricity pretty well.

These days, everything (PC, monitor, chairs, desks) seems to be black. I would like to see some white PCs and white mouse and keyboard and monitor.

I wanted a way to make Linux show kB, MB, GB but looks like they don't have that option.

  25. I always found CDs cool. A nice shiny disc that is able to act as a diffraction grating and also carries a lot of data. Then came DVDs which were exciting bc of the quality video, the extra content. The downside was that these discs can get scratched easily while for VHS, it was not a problem. Bluray was a less exciting technology but it is good nonetheless. It is too bad that a lot of the population lost interest in these technologies. No PC games are released on discs. I guess movies on Blueray are still made but for how long?

For example, my dictionnary Larousse de poche (pocket) has only 1 page of words with k. Pages 57 to 104 are words starting with C. Also, the words with k are kayak, karate, kyste, kangourou, karting. They are all foreign loan words.

  32. @Nigel Cam Laptops come with a builtin UPS: the battery. That's pretty sweet. Being less easily serviced is the norm since 2000. I have tried to open LCD monitors, LCD TVs, toasters, remote controls and everything I can get my hands on. When I remove the screws, they still don't open. I have to get the jackhammer and damage the casing to open them. Once open, the circuit boards are hard to remove. The various components are very delicate. Putting it back together is very difficult. You aren't suppose to repair them. You are suppose to junk it.

  34. I guess with film, when you have a few photons hit the AgCl crystal, a bunch of AgCl decompose, maybe in the thousands. So, film images won't be perfectly clear. If the crystals move a tiny bit during the development process, that too will contribute to blurriness. So, in terms of pixels, what is the resolution of a 35 mm film?

  36.  @frazermartin3259  : NH3 would make a great fuel. 4 NH3 + 3 O2 -> 2 N2 + 6 H2O You don't get any CO2. You could use a platinum catalyst to decompose any NO2 that forms into N2 and O2. The only problem is that making NH3 is energy intensive.

For these types of devices, you just need to heat a part of it to make the refrigerator work. People who go to camping have these types of refrigerators.

  43. My home's thermostat takes 2 wires. The heaters don't have a circuit board. They are just baseboard heaters. There is one thermostat per room. The gigantic heater in the picture seems to be a full home heater. That wastes energy.

Why are bags of chips the same size yet they are getting lighter? What used to be 250 g came down to 230 g, then 200 g, then 180 g. The idea is that the "idiot" will think the product has become cheaper. I'm sure you can think of many more examples from your supermarket. People aren't stupid. We live in a world of coupons, groupons, sales and rebates. Hard drive manufacturers were taken to court over their "cleverness". Did it help a certain manufacturer sell more? So now, all HDD manufacturers are doing the same thing and the playing field between them is leveled again. None of them have an advantage over the other. So what's next? Cheap printers and overpriced ink? HP, Lexmark, Epson aren't doing themselves any favors with their cleverness. It is obvious that they each copy each other's business model. You also have Apple who design products that aren't easy to repair. They have lobbied the government to make opening their products illegal. The reason they give is that you might injure yourself by opening it. Louis Rossmann has a channel about the tricks Apple uses.
