This topic in media today is quite overblown when looking at the sheer number of installations the US military had overseas for example, in 1955 or 1965. The scope & scale of the US military is so tiny (in true measure in % of population in uniform or % of GDP spent on defense) in comparison to points of comparison to the Cold War
