  1. The generalities about conscription mentioned were somewhat inaccurate. The US used conscription to fill the ranks of the military from 1946 to 1973, in both in peace & conflict. 75% of the men who served in Vietnam were volunteers. In 1968 there was 3.5 million men on active duty in a deterrance force structure around the entire globe, with only 500,000 in Vietnam.
