Large numbers of casualties in ancient battles are not just "somewhat unreliable", they are plain ridiculous. 1. There was no such manpower available. 2. Logistics - there were no trains or automobiles to move provisions needed to supply forces that large. And of course exaggeration, a battle of Kulykovo pole in Russia is a typical example, numbers have dropped from 400000 in XIX century estimates to 4000-5000 in recent times after research on site of the battle plus manpower estimates - all biggest medieval battles I've seen used around 1/3 of countries manpower.
