Since my native and 2nd language both have genders, it's not that hard actually - the word itself indicates gender by the ending of a noun. Like -a; -e indicated feminine, while -s; -is; -us is masculine. It goes as far in my native Latvian as even having two forms of "it": feminine "tā" and "masculine "tas", since there is no neuter, every word belongs to one of two genders, which is also indicated by adjectives, verbs and numericals ("one" is either fem. "viena" or masc. "viens"), so changing only pronouns would not work without destroying or completely changing language or even whole culture.
