I live in relatively small city in Northern Europe. I can walk to a farmland in approx. 30 minutes and reach the old town / downtown in 40. Besides while my flat is surrounded by other 2-5 storey houses, it's also surrounded by some trees and lawns, even some wildlife, like hedgehogs. Besides I can move around by a bus, a tram (citycar), a train or a trolleybus - they all are in 3-10 min walking distance from my home. And a couple of supermarkets are in 15-20 min walking distance. Or I can drive my car or ride a bicycle... or a kick-scooter. I really prefer this kind of environment than "suburbia", which, honestly, looks somewhat ugly, at least from above. Of course we do have some suburban "villages" for the rich, but they restrain the freedom of movement of their inhabitants to a very few options, sometimes to a single road.

Even if people vote where to invest their tax money, there still is a problem - the don't hire experts and don't trust them (common, just look how many Americans believe in global climate change being a hoax, in the Big Pharma or "organic" food being healthier). So when it comes to investment, they choose to build a new stadium, because entertainment, yeah! ... and then a bridge in their city collapses (true story from early 2000s, after which examinations of public infrastructure were run, only to find out 75% of bridges in USA being in rough shape). Who's fault is it? The big bad government! So, should we invest in maintenance of the public roads more? No, it's boring, lets build a stadium for sports games!

Well, the "problem" with democracy is - if there are lot of idiots around, system might become dysfunctional.
And I believe, it's not about trust to a bureaucrat. After all, he or she is our employee, after all, the power belongs to "we, the people". Of course, it's not that simple in practice. So IMO it's all down to employing those who knows better than we do - the experts in the field. Of course, experts have their own dissenting opinions and internal squabbles too, especially in fields that are not strict and precise as mathematics - economics. social sciences etc.

Well, it always works in both directions, doesn't it? Europe is just as unprotected from Russia as Russia is from Europe. And one could snatch Russia's Far East region and Eastern part of Siberia, while Russia would be absolutely unable to take it back, as Siberia is just as great obstacle for their own forces as for invading ones.
P.S. Wouldn't make sense to move the capital if Russia over the Url mountains to Asian portion of the country? I mean, from defence point of view; from economic positions, of course, it would make no sense to move industry because of lack of waterways and roads.
And as for NATO's collective defence - don't attack NATO then, easy! In early 2000s Russian politicians mentioned, that inability to invade Baltic states (for "peace keeping" purposes, of course), would be a threat to Russia's national security, thus NATO=threat. Sure Baltics them proceeded to join NATO with even greater effort. Some people just don't know when to shut up. :-D

It's not just passenger trains that suck in US. I've seen a video made by a truck driver, he drives 18-wheelers both in Europe and in US and Canada. He is of an opinion, that American trucks are made much cheaper - the don't have secondary frame and no double beams of the main frame, thus a driver can feel it bending a bit, not so good sound insulation, suspension ins't that good either, they lack all that buttons and whistles that makes driver's life easier, especially gearbox and breaks, so in American style truck a man gets tired much quicker, add to that roads, that are smoother in Europe, at least it's Western part.

I can reach farmland on foot or by bus, many shops, markets and supermarkets are in 15-30 min walking distance, same with pharmacies (in European sense, not American), and other facilities (schools, hospitals, car repair shops etc), I have multiple transportation options - bus, tram, trolleybus and train in 3-10 min walk from my home; and due to walkways I can not just walk, but also safely ride a bicycle or kick-scooter, or electric scooter; besides European cities have parks and forests around them, thus IMO concentrated European style settling is more convenient.
