I' wonder if German closer to upper or lower part of that "in between", like writing three characters "sch" for a single "sh" sound (a single "š" in my native Latvian) seems to be pretty wasteful use of space  But then again they might save space by merging multiple words together. Russian texts IIRC takes some 15% or more space, but then again it might partly be because of some Cyrillic characters being pretty wide. Encountered it myself when making catalogs and price-lists in two languages, we used font with modified narrower than standard spaces between characters for Russian, but still Russian part took up slightly more space.
