Well, that idiot was not just any Christian, but a Catholic fanatic (I was bapticized in RC tradition, so I can say that, I guess; besides that happened back in 1970s in USSR, where Christians were supposedly persecuted, they/we were, but relatively mildly). And it wasn't something Americans (mostly Protestan) brought to Vietnam, but a heritage from previous colonial era.
BTW, Ameriacns are notoreus for being really bad at waging "colonial wars", as they have no such experience, they are too used to rely on firepover, instead of diplomacy. Dutch, for example, are much beter at that, what they call "oil stain policy" - get to be liked by local populace, and those news will spread by word of mounth from village to village. More talks and policing = less fighting.
