  1. +Gabe newell Because living in pretty much stone age (sure, they knoew some mettalurgy and theyr gold jewelry was amazing) isn't exactly helping to protect your culture and knowledge, when people with steel armour and weapons arrive. Add to that weaker immunity. Besides, they (at least one of their cultures) also "knew" that Universe demands massive human sacrifices every 52nd year, or else the world is going to parish.

  2. +bashpr0mpt I guess you are setting wide use of steam power a bit too early, like a couple of centuries early. Besides first really functional large sewage system in London was built only in the later half of the XIX century, and there were still water pumps and wells around at that time, to which people had to go with buckets or carry it by other means, as running water for everyone too is a fairly recent achievement. Basically, what we see is models of society where priests ruled - Mesoamerica and South America, and one, where state took upper hand - Europe. Religion isn't good for progress, even it might be excellent in astronomy and math, since people are... well, religious about it.

  3. P.S Besides, I honestly think American civilisations were doomed to defeat. People don't realise, how superior metal weapons and armour is to stone and wood. Obsidian weapons might seem amazing, it's sharp, never gets dull, inflicts terrible wounds. But steel doesn't shatter. Hell, forget about steel, even bronze serves well! So, I say Americas would be conquered even if some ancient Near East, North African or European civilisation invaded as early as by the time of Trojan wars.
