In WWII they were 'world class" only due to allied assistance and sheer numbers of troops, their commanders largely were just as dumb as current Russian ones. Like Soviet veterans were complaining and wondering, how come their trenches were in a low area, often flooded, while Germans had cosy positions overlooking area? All steam engines carrying troops and materials were made in USA, bulk of Soviet trucks were also American "Studebaker", tank, that stopped German advances on Moscow were supplied by Brits.
Or let's take an iconic Soviet tank - T-34-85 was made by Soviets, but it had aluminum engine block - aluminium was supplied by US, armour needed rare metals to make a proper alloy - supplied by US, it demanded larger turret ring, which Soviets were not able to produce themselves before Americans supplied them with a machines (only two for whole USSR) that could make those, same with longer barrels for 85mm guns - only possible to bore with machines supplied by Allies, even it's ammo had propellant supplied by Allies, same with explosives in shells themselves.
