And because locals were all too happy to serve Arab and European colonisers and sell off their own people, thus turning slave trade into their main industry for several centuries.

@larrykemet6709 That's plain distilled bullshit. I come from what is now again part of the West - a poor European ex-Soviet country. What do we have to do with "keeping Africa poor"? Is that what made us much more wealthier than during Soviet era? No and no!

@larrykemet6709 No wonder you have no functional economics, you prefer blame game to teal job. And yes, you are right, it's especially hard for an Eastern European to understand you. We were colonies ourselves and had foreign armed forces of then world's supposedly most powerful army on our streets less than 30 years ago. Unarmed people then built barricades against them. Now we have pretty well established economies, even if they are among the poorest on EU, where many African countries gained independence in 1960s, but... WTF, guys?!

How does that contradict his conclusions? Private or state driven innovations, USA and Canada have been more successful than other countries in Americas, due to their political buildup. However, as capital gets concentrated into the hands of smaller and smaller group of elites in US, and lack of easily accessible healthcare and education becomes an obstacle, also IS political system has been downgraded in ratings from "democracy" to "flawed democracy" even before Trump, so US might start to lag behind the rest of the West.

P.S. A simple test. If keeping someone poor was the way to prosperity, we should see growing numbers of poor as there is a growing number of wealthy people. Is that the case? No! On contrary - poverty is at it's lowest in whole history, so much so, obesity on average has become a bigger problem than starvation.

@larrykemet6709 Oh, a "word salad"? How nice! P.S. Now I got to wonder, what's your native language? It might be English, in which case that's even worse.

@larrykemet6709 That's bullshit. Would lack of that past impede current French car, aerospace, nuclear, wine and food industry? No! Well, except uranium ore from Mali, but that's about it. P.S. Oh, BTW English is my third language, so it might be a bit weird sometimes. At least my native Latvian and Russian, which I speak fluently, certainly are better than my English.

@larrykemet6709 yeah, you ditty racist , we here are a stupid and ignorant subhumans. XD Or rather - nobody gives a shit about Africa. Oil? Sure, same with Lybia, where France surprisingly sided with usurper against internationally recognised government. Yet again, France would still be there and prosper even without that oil. It's not that they are rich because you are poor, it s just that your sorry broke ases can't organise proper, functional states, that others would reckon with. And if you don't matter, who gives a shit if France is playing games in Africaor not.

How is "Belt and Road" and innovation, and not just a neo-colonialism? China isn't just about fail, it's failing already, it's development is slowing down, as ineffective structure of CCP does not promote innovation, thus they are trying to fire up nationalistic hysteria (like that is going to help - Russian and German empires, Nazis, and Soviets - this recipe has failed everywhere) and feed people "China is the future". China could have been the future around a decade ago, if their leaders were not so busy with staying in power.
