The USA are not civilised, they are still on their way there, it's still the Frontier, the outskirts of civilisation.
I live in the Eastern most part of EU, in one of former Soviet states (or rather - one formerly occupied by Soviets), so your healthcare system is nowhere near as nice and fancy as in Western, "the old" Europe, yet it seems to be so much better, when compared to American system at least by pricing, but we lag behind in what services we can get. For example, I do have chronic condition, some specialists I needed before I got diagnosed were not in my local clinic, so I went to a private one for MRI's and some other stuff, the most expensive were MRI, they could cost from 160 to 260+ Euros + 78 Euros for contrast stuff. Not an insanely large sum to me, as now I earn above average, but a lot for people who got minimum wage of 360 Euros netto (it was back then, now it's 430 after taxes). However I had private insurance from my workplace, and a good one - platinum, so most of it got covered anyway and most of the time I didn't pay at all or paid very little, I mean - even less than those 240 Euros in a private, for profit clinic!
Or let's take the call of ambulance, which, of course, is free, instead of 500-200 USD it would be in the states. The first time in my life had to use one last year. Spent several hours in hospital, got some examination and drugs, paid 6,5 Euros for that, plus spent some more in pharmacy on medication on my way home. So, it was not completely free for me, but not expensive either.
Now, when I got official diagnosis, drugs to ease any possible crisis of my chronic condition are 100% covered by the state.
