I'm not a German, but my family car got to be an universal (a station wagon) or a combi (a hatchback), in some cases a minivan might also make sense. My car isn't even really economic (on average 12,5 litres per 100km of gasoline mostly driving in city, that's like 18,8mpg in American units), especially given fuel prices here in Europe. Hilariously, my V6 gasoline car has that green round German sticker on windshield, indicating it's relatively ecologically friendly given it's emissions.
P.S. And, of course, it got to be a popular European (including "Ford" Europe) or Japanese, maybe Korean too, car, to make servicing it simpler - mechanics know them and parts are plenty.
