Some streets in Europe were widened not for sanitary reasons, but to make crushing a revolution easier - it's harder to build wide barricades, yet easier to use cavalry and artillery in cities with wide, straight streets.

@maniravsadhur8409 Wide boulevards slice city into pieces, giving control over movement between those blocks. And police action is not exactly the same as that of an army against rebels with almost no restrictions, like they could even use artillery. But sure, not all barricades are the same either. In 1991 we here in USSR and Eastern Europe built barricades out of concrete slabs, trucks and busses, as we expected a potential attack of Soviet armed forces.
