Yeah, if they wanted to "let people know how much government is taking from them", they would show both - the price without tax and the price with tax. So I call that complete BS and a lame excuse, as the only point in showing only the lowest price on the tag is to make things look cheaper and make bigger sales on people who are not good at math.
Besides here in Europe we do get to see how big the tax is - recipe does show the price without tax and the amount of VAT. Besides by law sellers are obliged to show two prices - per piece and per one kilogram or one liter, so you would be aware, if you actually get more for your money, or is that pack of butter cheaper, because it's 180 instead of 200 gram pack next to it. However, some shops use this to fool you - you see a price in big digits for a cake, let's say nine euros. A good price!!! No! It's for one kilo, where the whole cake weights considerably more, and the price for it is in tiny digits underneath big ones. I hate this! So I rarely go to that shop.
