  1. I guess in English it's called "the wolf's hour", not "the bull's hour" - the darkest part of the night (around 3am), when there is some tension in the air, when evil spirits reign and death often comes after those, who have reached the end of their lives.

  2. TBH, my all time favourite novel by Efremov was "Таис Афинская" (Thais of Athens) - a historical fiction, so to speak. However now it might feel like incredibly sexist in some aspects to some, but on the other hand, we can't judge the people, who lived 2,5 millennia ago by modern standards.

  3. "Час быка" is not necessarily a criticism on Soviet system, it supposedly addressed issues with Chinese "improper Socialism" (back then relations between USSR and PRC were quite hostile). However, from our perspective all those issues were also quite typical for Soviet system too, especially environmental issues caused by pollution and mindless exploitation of nature.
