Did it work?
I do understand, that people in older times had different beliefs and feared different things, yet I'd send Vlad a letter "May We kindly ask You to execute more of your own people, please?"
Seriously, I knew he was sworn enemy of Ottomans, fine by me, but what's the deal with being so awful with his own people, which makes life under Ottomans not so terrible option?
Sure, Russians have a proverb "Бей своих, чтоб чужие боялись!" (Beat your own, so others would fear you), and Machiavelli said that it's better to be feared, to be hard, as anyone can betray a softie, where they will fear to betray someone like Dracula. But Machiavelli also noted, that the best way to keep one's throne is to be a good ruler, loved by the people, not soft, not generous (not in a sense of bankrupting country on populist projects, just look at Venezuela, yet spending money wisely is perfectly OK), but hard when needed, smart and just, IMO Vlad failed to be a good ruler, so he had no choice but to be strict and violent.
