  1. +Engineering Explained Really? Here (Latvia, North-East Europe) it is, or at least was not so long ago, mandatory. Peraps now there is an option to choose automatmatic transmision for exam. The idea is (or was) - learn a bit harder way, get into the basics on how engine and transmission works, and afterwards do whatever you like.

  2. No Name People with special needs obviously are an exception to this, some cars even have all manual (no pedals) brakes and accelerator. One of my colleges has one arm only partly functional (he can move arm, but not fingers) after a stroke, now he drives cars with automatic transmission, but he actually started driving back in Soviet times and has a lot of experience with manual.

  3. 9:27 - LoL, once upon a time I calculated my height in those weird imperial units, it was 5'11,85", so not actual six feet, if I'm absolutely pedantic and honest about it, yet so close, it's pretty much not worth mentioning those miserable 0,15 inches (3.8mm) lacking to full 6'. 😆 And yes, my old Golf III with the "entry level GTI" engine was one of those - claimed 2 liters, but actually it was 1984cc, not full 2000.

It also takes a bit fuel to charge a battery that is needed to start engine plus compensate for electricity consumed (lights, AC, music) while engine was not running, not just fuel for engine alone; anyway, I guess it takes less than half a minute to recharge. Besides I drive manual gear shift only, so there is no difference between "park" or "drive".

  5.  @Markle2k  Well, until recently I could be torturing starter for pretty long (not whole engine, just starter), just swapped it for a new one, now it jumps to life instantly. And yes, even old headlights (my car is over two decades old) don't consume all that much, I have an experience of driving on battery only around 35 kilometres, after a roller on alternator belt tensioner failed. XD In short, I will not turn engine off in traffic - it's too unpredictable, when I will need to move again (MO start-stop system on such an old vehicle as mine is), but standing at a railway crossing - sure, then it makes sense.

  6.  @Markle2k  Yeah, I guess not, so I got lucky. IIRC alternator belt besides generator also runs AC pump/compressor, and that causes one weird issue, I can't really explain - when climate control is off - engine revs drop a tiny little. I would have thought it should be the other way around - additional load would have an impact and create some resistance. Maybe there is some mechanism on AC's compressor, that causes this when it's not running.

  7. 1) range - perfectly OK 2) place to charge it at home - no 3) buying one - no and no, meaning neither new (too expensive), nor used (old batteries - short range, longer recharge, insane replacement price). Besides I live in Northern Europe, and batteries get weak in cold season. Which means, only used petrol car is my only option, and definitely not a diesel one, old diesels are only stench and costly to fix trouble.

  9. Not my price range, so it doesn't matter how I feel about this. 1) Cheaper cars will not have this; 2) I will buy used car, if it even ever gets to that, so I will get to any technology with a 15-20 year delay.

  11. How about a hybrid turbo with a small spin-up electric motor to help overcome inertia and avoid lag? Also a separate oil system for that turbo. Sure, both such systems ar ed added weight, but maybe it's worth it.

  12. Well, it would take 3-5 stops to fill gas tank even on a really old compact gasoline car (or gas, or diesel), only a few minutes each, new cars should be more economic, but my quarter century old VW consumes a bit under 7 litres per 100km riding at 90km/h and has 60 litre tank.

IMO a bicycle gives a pretty good idea how that balance between "load" and "RPM" works: - a gear too low - you turn pedals almost effortlessly, but you got to turn them really really fast to reach some speed (low load, high RPM); - a gear too high - cycling becomes really hard, one can actually break a chain doing this - on a car that would be a clutch and the rest of drive-train, or engine will just stall, or YOU can stall. XD - give up, since you are the engine of the bike. That's high load and low RPM; - finally, start in first gear and quickly move up all gears as you accelerate - takes effort, but feels good, that's a good balance of load and RPM.

  15. This very well explains why there is a concept of electric trucks with a current collector (like that on a train or trolleybus) and power lines over an autobahn - that would be a much efficient than running them on batteries alone, where such special power lines are available.
