  1. I seriously doubt "already profitable" part, especially given the number of complains and things to fix under warranty. Other than that the number of sales in US only confirms the stereotype of Americans not being very bright.

My "beater car' was 1995 Golf Mk.III Variant (station wagon version of Golf) with a 2 liter gasoline engine - their entry level GTI one - no 4 valves per cylinder, no fancy injection or RV block, but pretty powerful to be fun to drive. If my health did not give up (I got difficulties walking and working pedals in car), making me unable to drive manual, likely I'd still have it.
