There definitely are some major problems in Russian culture, although I'd say, only among older generation and chavs, young people do not have such a degree of intolerance to "deviants" and young people are much, much less religious than old farts in power - those guys are almost 70 on average, while the average age in Russia is 40, power just gets senile and retarded, Putin is a good example of that.
One major problem is inability to tell fear from respect. Russians have that fucking stupid saying "боятся, значит уважают" - "they fear you, thus they respect you". No! Those people are not even fearing you really, they will seek any way possible to get rid of such "authority" - an oppressor, an invader. I understood that as early as like age 10, and I'm, no genius, so how dumb must be those, who still don't get it? One can not beat people into obedience and expect that to last, to turn that into some kind of "harsh love". We will pretend to tolerate that, and wait for the moment of weakness of oppressors, and then... Just look what happened in 1991!

"Being invaded" all the time is complete bullshit. I happen to live in that area between Russia and Germany, they both were aggressors, trying to snatch as much as they could. The difference these days is - Germans have been cured of the disease of imperialism, while many Russians have not. Serbs had similar problems in 1990s and quite a harsh treatment, even if it was much milder than that that Nazis got dropped on them.
P.S. And no, there have been no fair elections in Russia since 2004. Russian politologists are even somewhat proud that Russia currently is world's largest and richest source of election rigging techniques.
And that "Putin is Gandi compared to..." well.. yes, because he has no choice! His power is relatively weak, he is not a dictator, Russia is not a totalitarian regime like USSR and fascist regimes were, he is an authoritarian "president" like regimes of Latin America and Africa, a populist selling BS to the people, while filling his own pockets.
