I would categorize 3rd generation not on the features common with rifles, but on their design philosophy: purposely built based on available technology and taking into account ergonomics, also designed without rush, unlike war time production; which distinguishes them from 1st rifle-like ones and from simplified for mass-production 2nd generation. BTW, doesn't this place small scale production SMGs made in war zones (like Balkans and Caucasus) in the 2nd generation slot despite them being made in 1990s?
