For example, the independence movement of my country was supported by Brits in an effort to create a buffer zone between Bolshevics and Europe, so 100 years ago we got weapon deliveries from British empire. Today it still depends on who is backing you, like Kurds were firing "Milan" and TOW missiles at ISIS suicide bomber cars, not Soviet/Russian made "Kornet" or other Russian ATGMs. And I've heard an argument, that qualities of neither AK, nor AR-15 derivatives can be judged by their popularity, since both got handed out as foreign aid form Soviets or USA throughout XX century. While the weapon that was also very popular and wide spread, but bought and produced by countries themselves was... (drumroll) - FN FAL!
