  1. The basic idea of patents perhaps was not so bad, but then came lawyers and turned everything to shit into a profit, often out of thin air. Imagine, you are a poor guy with an ingenious idea. Can you patent it and start getting royalties? No, because you need to pay first to get it patented. Besides then there are monopolies, trying to keep their dominant position, like the one that tried to keep a monopoly on the very idea of an automobile (steam, gasoline or electric engine, doesn't matter). At least that's what they did in USA in late XIX - early XX century.
