I guess SMGs wasn't just considered a silly idea, there was some ideological background - SMGs were considered a weapon of police in those damn capitalist countries (Germany with MP18, USA with "Thompson" etc). Then came the Winter War and 'oh, shhhh....!!!" P.S. Also, during the war partizans (guerillas) found out, that it is easier to make a replika of a supposedly more complicated guns like PPD, than a PPSh, I guess that's because in a "Khaiber pass" level workshop, where the main tools are a file and a hammer, it is easier to copy milled, than stamped parts.

  3. Matthew Kriebel English sh and German sch obviously are not a single letter like Russian ш, but some languages (including my native tongue) with an alphabet based on Latin script do have letter š or some other character for this sound.

  4. zumbazumba1 I guess they used ready barrels, there was no mass production, but even a few guns are better than none. Besides I've heard of a makeshift conversion of some looted rifles (IIRC those were K98) to semi-auto ones, at least one spring was needed for that job.

  7. +The Mad Marxist Well, that indeed does make sense. But then they, like everybody else in this situation found out, that a pistol or revolver alone for tank crews, artillery guys, pilots etc is not quite enough.
