jsm666 I guess mounting a Gatling gun previous to jet era would be a real PITA task. First, it has multiple barrels, which means weight, common, Germans even used MG08 / Maxim deriatives with no water in them, and steel is much heavier than water. In most cases a propeller obstucts the line of fire (unless aeroplane is built with a pusher propeller), mounting a synchronizer on a rotary gun might actually be impossible or very complicated so it doesn't make sense. Mounting in the wings decreases the effectivenes of fire. So the only planes that could carry a Gatling gun would be two engine fighters, like P-38 Lightning. However, Gatling guns surfaced only after WWII because speeds of jet planes demanded high rate of fire, before that it was not such a big issue.
